Abstract:
The Papahānaumokuākea Associated Cetacean Ecology Survey (PACES) was a line transect survey for cetaceans within the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM) inside the Hawaii exclusive economic zone (7 May - 5 June 2013). The set of standard tracklines surveyed was established prior to the cruise and was intended to representatively sample cetacean habitat from the eastern boundary of the PMNM to Midway Atoll. Twenty-eight days of on-effort surveys were completed, resulting in 92 cetacean sightings including 14 identified species and unidentified dolphins and whales.

Photos and biopsy samples were collected and satellite tags were deployed during some sightings. Acoustic detections were recorded from a towed hydrophone array. Sonobuoys were deployed opportunistically. A High-frequency Acoustic Recording Package (HARP) was recovered and redeployed off Pearl and Hermes Reef. Oceanographic data were collected (CTD, XBT).</para>
