VAQS records basic (level A) data, for all marine mammals, as well as more in depth (level B and C) data whenever possible. The OBIS dataset contains the basic level A data for all stranded marine mammals, responded to by VAQS, and spans the years of 1988-2008.
<purpose>These data can be used to report the presence and seasonality of marine mammal species when survey data are lacking. Absence of a species from the dataset does not, however, indicate absence from the area as stranding data are opportunistic data that require detection of a mortality on a coastline. Those data points located in a water body indicate that the animal was first seen floating. Human interaction (HI) data are included as part of the level A dataset but must be analyzed carefully as 'YES' for HI does not necessarily indicate that the stranding or the death of an animal was caused by human activity.</purpose></descript><citation><citeinfo><origin>Barco, S</origin><pubdate>2013</pubdate><title>Virginia Aquarium Marine Mammal Strandings 1988-2008</title><onlink>https://doi.org/10.82144/1927acdf</onlink><serinfo><sername>OBIS-SEAMAP</sername><issue>502</issue></serinfo><pubinfo><pubplace>http://seamap.env.duke.edu/dataset/502</pubplace><publish>OBIS-SEAMAP</publish></pubinfo><geoform>vector digital data</geoform><edition>Version 1.0.0</edition></citeinfo></citation><timeperd><current>ground condition</current><timeinfo><rngdates><begdate>19880115</begdate><enddate>20081216</enddate></rngdates></timeinfo></timeperd><status><progress>Complete</progress><update>None planned</update></status><spdom><bounding><westbc>-76.966667</westbc><eastbc>-75.16142</eastbc><northbc>38.179276</northbc><southbc>34.92617</southbc></bounding><lboundng><leftbc Sync="TRUE">-76.966667</leftbc><rightbc Sync="TRUE">-75.16142</rightbc><bottombc Sync="TRUE">34.92617</bottombc><topbc Sync="TRUE">38.179276</topbc></lboundng><descgeog>Virginia</descgeog></spdom><accconst>Open public unless otherwise noted.
