Abstract

This dataset represents a subset of the INBO-database on the distribution of seabirds and marine mammals starting from 1992 in north-west European marine areas with a focus on Belgian marine waters.
The INBO Seabirds at Sea Database was established in 1992 in close collaboration with the European Seabird at Sea Database (ESAS). This dataset represents a subset of the INBO-database on seabird distribution holding information on the distribution of seabirds and marine mammals in north-west European marine areas with a focus on Belgian marine waters. The most recent version of this database contains records that were collected during 1992-2011. The data were collected using a standardised ESAS methodology. The Belgian Science Policy (BELSPO) and the Management Unit of the North Sea Mathematical Models and the Scheldt Estuary (MUMM) sponsored parts of the data collection.

The data have been used to produce atlasses of seabird distrution, vulnerability maps and biological valuation maps. Subsequently, these data have been used for a wide variety of research purposes.

Supplemental information

This dataset was downloaded from OBIS (https://obis.org/). The records for only marine mammals, seabirds, sea turtles and rays and sharks were extracted. Records with no longitude/latitude or no date (eventDate) were excluded.

Attributes

Overview

This section explains attributes included in the original dataset. OBIS-SEAMAP restricts the attributes available to the public to date/time, lat/lon and species names/counts only. Should you need other attributes described here, you are encouraged to contact the data provider.

Attributes described below represent those in the original dataset provided by the provider.
All attributes are included in the downloadable file (CSV or ESRI File Geodatabase) for "Complete Set of Dataset".
