Abstract

North Queensland, Australia is a well known nesting area for marine turtles. Six of the world's seven species of marine turtles are found off the coast of Queensland. Despite this, there is a lack of community awareness and understanding of the issues impacting on these great mariners.

This project aims to demonstrate to the community through a satellite tracking device what the day-to-day life is for a typical green turtle; with the purpose of empowering community members to be aware of turtles and their movements.

Peanut is a young green turtle who weighs 15kg and who was found almost dead floating along Ross Creek, Townsville in October 2011. Peanut underwent some intensive rehabilitation over a 5 month period at James Cook University and was released into Cleveland Bay on the 9th of March 2012.
